“Electricity from waste is wonderful. This is an Occasion for pride and joy for the people of Narikkuni Panchayath” – Says Shri. Ramachandran Kadannappally, Hon. Minister for Devaswom, Kerala State.
Waste treatment is one of the complex problems confronted by human beings these days, in the cities as well as in villages. It is quite necessary to take adequate measures to treat the wastes accumulating day by day in Kerala where the density of population is very high. In this situation the service of BIOTECH in producing electricity also along with the treatment of waste, with application of scientific technologies by convincing the people, according to the opinion of the Hon. Minister for Devaswom Shri,Ramachandran Kadannappally is wonderful. The Minister was making out this observation while inaugurating the waste treatment electricity generation plant installed in the Narikkuni Grama Panchayath, in Kozhikode District on 21st May 2010. According to him the people of the Narikkuni Panchayath can be proud of having this plant as one of the valuable achievements of the people.
The process of generating electricity by making use of the biogas produced with the eco-friendly treatment of waste is worth to be appreciated. The laws and regulations enacted against the tendency of throwing away the waste, in public places with objective of protecting the environment and ensuring the public heath were of immense help to the people. It was only on account of these stringent measures that the waste management problem that was created in Sabarimala where nearly 4 crores of devotees assembled for worship during the last year could be solved to a considerable extent. The co-operation of the people is very essential for making such attempts effective and successful. The Minister has therefore sought the whole hearted support and co-operation of the people for successfully implementing similar people friendly schemes.

In the inaugural meeting presided over by the Koduvally MLA Adv. P.T.A. Rahim, Smt.M.P. Rukia Teacher, the Narikuni Panchayath President, welcomed the gathering. The detailed project was explained by
Dr. A. Sajidas, Director, BIOTECH. He has stressed the need for observing strictly the rules for the proper maintenance of the plant for running it efficiently. He had also sought the co-operation and support of the public and traders in the area. He reminded the people to restrict the deposit of waste in the plant in accordance with the limit prescribed.

The project was finalized jointly by the Narikkuni Grama Panchayath and the BIOTECH. The construction of the waste treatment electricity generation plant adjacent to the Village Office by the side of the Narikkuni Market was completed by BIOTECH by harnessing different modern technologies. In the present context, when waste is becoming a real threat to human beings and the environment, BIOTECH had come up as a model, by the installation and operation of the waste treatment plants very efficiently in about 50 places in the State, which are very crowded and thickly populated.

This plant is capable of treating 300 Kg. of easily decaying wastes in an eco-friendly manner and for generating 5 KV electricity. The Electricity is presently used for lighting 50 CF Lamps around the premises of the plant. Even now sufficient quantity of electricity for lighting about 100 additional CF lamps, can be generated from the plant.

The plant is designed in such a way that the waste treatment process as well as the generation of electricity can be viewed by the public. BIOTECH an N.G.O at Trivandrum is implementing different projects of the Central Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy. This organization is providing subsidy also for the beneficiaries of the plants generating electricity by the treatment of bio wastes. Such waste treatment plants are also being installed by BIOTECH with the co-operation and support of the Local Self Govt. Agencies.
