BIOTECH Waste Treatment Plants will be set up in a wider Scale – Shri. V.S. Sivakumar, Minister

Trivandrum: Mr. V.S. Sivakumar, Minister for Transport and Devaswam, has expressed the view that for the purpose of decentralized waste treatment, BIOTECH model waste treatment plants are to be installed in a wider scale in all the Panchayats and Municipal areas of the State as a solution to the problem of waste, which is being aggravated day by day. The Minister was speaking on the occasion of the inauguration of the waste treatment biogas plant installed by BIOTECH in the Kalliyoor Grama Panchayath in Trivandrum District. Smt. Jameela Prakasam, MLA , in her inaugural presidential address has pointed out that, the BIOTECH waste treatment plant which is functioning in the Sreekariyam Market in Trivandrum for the last seven years is to emulated as a model to be followed for the treatment of waste. She also asserted that necessary technical support should be provided by BIOTECH on a continuous basis for the successful working of such plants. Dr. Sajidas, Director, BIOTECH while presenting his report has informed that the local body institutions are receiving all technical assistance direct from BIOTECH for a minimum period of five years right from the commencement of operation of the plant and that BIOTECH plants are designed in such a way that those should function in an efficient manner for a period from 15 to 20 years.

This plant has been installed in the Santhivila Market of Kalliyoor Grama Panchayath after incurring an expenditure of Rs. 10 lakhs and the plant is capable of treating 250 Kg. of bio waste per day with the application of Bio-methanation technology. The plant can be also generate 5 KW electricity per day which is used for lighting 50 CF Lamps installed in the market and its premises and for meeting the in-house requirements of the plant. The Panchayath is planning to install 100 more lights by utilizing the electricity generated in the plant.

In the inaugural meeting which was attended by a good number of guests, Mr. T.K. Silesh Kumar, Panchayath President welcomed the gathering and Mr. Rufas Daniel, Trivandrum District Panchayath Vice President conveyed the vote of thanks.
